Welcome to Atlantis: Where Fantasy Becomes Family Reality
Imagine a place where your kids can zoom down a waterslide through a shark tank, you can sip a piña colada by a turquoise lagoon, and everyone—from adrenaline junkies to nap enthusiasts—finds their own slice of paradise. That’s Atlantis Paradise Island in a nutshell.
A couple of years ago, my family and I set out for this Bahamian wonderland. I’ll be honest: I went in as a travel pro, legal eagle, and seasoned planner… but I left as a full-on Atlantis convert. If you’re looking for a trip that’ll dazzle the kids, impress the grandparents, and give you a treasure trove of stories (and photos!), this is it.
Quick Links:
Why Atlantis? (And Why We Fell in Love)
Atlantis isn’t just a resort—it’s a 141-acre playground where the ordinary rules of vacation don’t apply. Here’s what makes it legendary:
The Water Park: Aquaventure is 141 acres of pure, splashy joy—think high-speed slides, a mile-long lazy river, and pools for every mood. We went down all of them, and the lazy river isn't lazy - we called it a fast river. I have the scars to prove it from when my tube flipped over.
Marine Habitat: The largest open-air marine habitat in the world (yep, you read that right), with over 50,000 sea animals. We swam with the dolphins (picture below)
Beaches: Five miles of pristine white sand and every shade of blue water you can imagine.
Dining & Nightlife: From kid-friendly burgers to celebrity chef experiences, there’s something for every palate (and patience level).
Family Activities: Kids’ clubs, pottery painting, movie nights, and even a “crush” club for teens who want to pretend they don’t know you.
And that’s just scratching the surface. When we went, we planned for “just a few days”—and then immediately started plotting our return.
Our Atlantis Adventure: Family Memories in the Making
Let me set the scene: We arrive, slightly travel-weary but buzzing with excitement. The kids’ eyes go wide at the sight of the Royal Towers (they look like something out of a Disney dream). Within minutes, we’re checked in, wristbands on, and plotting our first move. (Pro tip: Check-in can get busy, so have snacks handy and keep your travel docs organized for a smooth start.)
Day One: Hitting the Water
We arrived and headed right for Aquaventure. The kids were determined to conquer the Leap of Faith—a 60-foot, near-vertical slide that shoots you through a clear tunnel surrounded by sharks. (Yes, actual sharks. No, you won’t get eaten. Yes, you’ll get a photo you can hold over your kids’ heads for years.)
I’ll admit, I was a little nervous. But after that first exhilarating plunge, we were all hooked. The mile-long Current lazy river was a family favorite—think rapids, waves, and plenty of laughter.
Day Two: Underwater Wonders
Atlantis’ Marine Habitat isn’t just an aquarium—it’s a living world. We wandered through tunnels surrounded by rays, marveled at the Predator Lagoon, and even tried a hands-on dolphin encounter at Dolphin Cay. The kids got to “train” a dolphin, and I got a heartwarming photo that’s now a family classic.
Day Three: Relaxation (and a Little Parental Indulgence)
After two days of non-stop action, we took it slow. The kids headed to Atlantis Kids Adventures, where they made crafts and new friends. My spouse and I snuck off to the Mandara Spa for a couples massage—because even legal eagles need to unwind.
That evening, we dined at Nobu, where the sushi is as fresh as the ocean breeze. For a more casual vibe, we loved Marina Pizzeria and The Village Burger Shack.
Day Four: Exploring the Island
Atlantis is amazing, but don’t forget to explore beyond the resort. We ventured into Nassau for a taste of local culture—think Straw Market, Junkanoo Beach, and a quick stop at Graycliff Chocolatier for treats to take home. You can walk to most of these or take a ride share or taxi.
Pro Tips for Your Atlantis Stay
1. Plan Ahead—But Be Flexible
Atlantis is huge. Download the resort map before you go, and prioritize must-do activities. But leave room for spontaneous discoveries—some of our best memories were unplanned.
2. Dining Reservations Are Your Friend
Popular spots fill up fast, especially during peak season. Book in advance through the Atlantis dining portal. Don’t miss the Fish by José Andrés for a splurge night. Be warned: Nothing is cheap at the resort, so it pays to venture out some nights.
3. Budget for Extras
Atlantis is a premium experience, and costs can add up. Plan for meals, drinks, and activities outside your package. I believe it cost us around $350 each for the dolphin experience. And most meals for a family of 4 on the property, will cost $100-150.
Pro tip: Bring reusable water bottles—there are refill stations throughout the resort.
4. Safety & Legal Tips
Travel Insurance: Absolutely essential. Medical care in the Bahamas is good but expensive.
Passports: Required for all U.S. travelers. Double-check expiration dates.
Resort Fees: These are standard and cover amenities like Wi-Fi and pool access. Ask for a breakdown at check-in. Unlike most resorts, the resort fees at Atlantis are worth it because of all the amenities that are included - like free access to the Aquaventure.
Kids’ Safety: Lifeguards are everywhere, but always keep an eye on little ones—Aquaventure is big!
5. Capture the Memories
Atlantis has professional photographers roaming the resort, but they are pricey. And nothing beats candid family snaps. Some of our best photos (and stories) came from unplanned moments—like a sandcastle competition or a surprise visit from a friendly parrot
What Sets Atlantis Apart (And Why We’d Go Back Tomorrow)
Something for Everyone: Whether your family is all about thrills, chills, or gourmet grills, Atlantis delivers.
Unbeatable Marine Life: From stingrays to sea turtles, the marine habitat is a living classroom.
World-Class Service: Staff go out of their way to make your stay special—especially if you mention a birthday or celebration.
Easy Access: Direct flights from many U.S. cities and a quick transfer from Nassau airport make it a breeze, even with kids in tow.
Atlantis for Every Traveler
Families: Water slides, kids’ clubs, and endless activities.
Couples: Romantic dinners, spa days, and private cabanas.
Multi-Gen Groups: Spacious suites, diverse dining, and activities for every age.
Solo Travelers: Yes, you’ll have a blast too—think yoga on the beach and quiet corners for reading
